How to run a Python script on a schedule online
Run a Python or Node script every day, week or hour without leaving your laptop on. Set a schedule, keep keys safe and read the logs.
Debraj
A script that sends a weekly report is useless if it only runs when your computer is awake. A schedule on a host fixes that.
What you need
- A script that finishes and exits, or a small app with a route that does the work.
- Keys in environment variables, not in the file.
- Somewhere to read results: a sheet, an email or a log.
Set it up
- Upload the folder, a .zip or a GitHub repo, or ask your assistant to deploy it over MCP. Cohostly shows draft settings first, and nothing goes live until you confirm.
- Add a schedule for the task, such as every weekday at 8:00.
- Run it once by hand and read the logs.
- Pause the schedule when you need to without deleting anything.
Make it safe
Give the script the narrowest connection it needs (for example, read one sheet and send from one address), and require approval before anyone changes what it does.
Common mistakes
- Relying on a local file to remember the last run.
- Using the computer’s time zone by accident.
- No logging, so a silent failure goes unnoticed.
Questions
Can I schedule a script without a server?
Yes. A schedule wakes the app, runs the task and lets it rest again.
How do I see if a scheduled run failed?
Open the logs. Failed checks are shown in plain words.
Does it run if nobody opens the app?
Yes. Schedules run on their own.
